Gary Lew Nickander, 90, of Noblesville, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on May 20, 1934 to Carl and Carrie (McCrary) Nickander in Aitkin, Minnesota.
Gary proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Hancock from 1952-1956. He met the love of his life, Joan Elizabeth Fieber, in his hometown of Madison, MN and they were married on September 20, 1958. Their first son was born a year to the day after they were married, and their first grandchild was also born on their anniversary. Gary graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1960 with a degree in Forestry. He was an entrepreneur and business owner of Nickander Associates which sold wood products. Gary had a zest for life, loved the lake life, traveling, bird watching, and telling a good story. He was very generous and supported many charitable organizations.
Gary is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joan Nickander; sister, Sue Johnson; son, Dan (Kaylynn) Nickander; daughters, Carla (Bill) Crask, Kelly (Mike) McVey, and Kari (Adam) Perry; grandchildren, Marci (Alex) Burrow, Lindsey McVey, Madi Nickander, Mitch McVey, Carl (Kylie) Nickander, Bonnie Nickander, Otto Perry, and Ava Perry; and his great-grandchildren, Dalyla, Arlo and Bronson Burrow.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Rodney Nickander.
Gary’s legacy lives on through his family, his stories, and the many lives he touched with his kindness and generosity. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, with Mass at 11:00 am, on Monday, March 3, 2025 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 9900 East 191st Street, in Noblesville. Livestream mass at: ologn.org/live
