Mass of Christian Burial for Gary Nuytten, 78, of Marshall, formerly of Ghent, will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 25, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a CCW Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a Parish Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow the service at St. Eloi Catholic Cemetery in Ghent.
Gary was born in Marshall, MN on May 8, 1945 to Gerard Nuytten and Mary (Noyes) Nuytten Loyson. He attended St. Eloi Elementary School in Ghent and Central Catholic High School in Marshall. Upon the death of his father, he began a career as a farmer at the age of 17. He married Sandra VanOverbeke on August 1, 1970 at Holy Redeemer Church in Marshall. He and Sandy raised their 2 children, Josh and Kim, on the family farm near Ghent. He retired from farming in 2003.
Gary cared and contributed a great deal to the community. He was active on the Grandview Township Board, St. Eloi Board of Education and caretaker of the St. Eloi cemetery, a job he took great pride in. He was part of the SMSU Foundation and Booster Club, Marshall Tiger Booster Club, St. Eloi Basketball Coach, YMCA maintenance board, and volunteer for Prairie Home Hospice. Hobbies included golf, biking, exercising of any sort, rolle bolle, cards, reading, traveling and any sporting event, especially when watching his grandkids.
Gary died on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at the Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy (VanOverbeke) Nuytten, son Josh (Lori) Nuytten and daughter Kim (John) Pilney, grandchildren Lilly & Kellen Nuytten and Natalie Pilney. Siblings Sharon (Ken Hayes) Schmidt, Judy (Dean) Van Overbeke, Jeff (Kris Brewers) Nuytten. In-laws Lynn (Tony) Toro, Kerry Eisenmenger, Jane (Barry) Weidauer, Joe (Shirley) Van Overbeke, Cathy (David) Pavlak and Brad (Kelsey) VanOverbeke along with many more family and friends.
Gary is preceded in death by father Gerard Nuytten, mother Mary (Noyes) Nuytten Loyson, Mary’s second husband Ray Loyson, nephew Neil VanOverbeke, mother- and father-in-law Joe and Anita VanOverbeke and brother-in-law Tom Eisenmenger.
Memorials preferred to St. Eloi Catholic Church, the National Parkinson's Foundation, Prairie Home Hospice, or a charity of the donor's choice.
