Gary Edward Onken age 81 of Frederica, Delaware passed away December 27, 2025 at Kent General Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 37 years Claudia, daughter Margaret Klink (Ryan) of Richmond, Virginia, son Philip Onken (Christy) of Charleston, Indiana, brother Carl Onken (Donna) of Harriman, Tennessee.
Mr. Onken son of Carl and Juanita Onken was born May 8, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia (1967) with a degree in chemistry. During his time at UVA, he was the manager of the Basketball team which began his love of all sports. He was a passionate supporter and follower of all things UVA. He was known for wearing UVA colors blue and orange almost every day.
Following graduation, he began working for Macy's in New York City as a chemist within their cosmetic development section. Later he worked as a forensic scientist for the crime labs for the New Jersey State Police and the Miami Police. He retired from the State of Delaware Division of Natural Resources and Environmental Control as a Chemist in June of 2012.
He was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church where he spent years singing in the choir. For several years he worked as Basketball Referee for High School Teams in the Kent County area. He was an avid reader, enjoyed watching cowboy movies and following the careers of his children. He also enjoyed attending the Army/Navy Football game and following March Madness. He was a true sports enthusiast.
Services will be held at the Torbert Funeral Chapel 1145 East Lebanon Road, Dover on January 3, 2026. Visitation will be at 10 AM followed by the service at 11 AM.
Interment will be private at Barratts Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions be made in his name to Food Bank of Delaware, 102 Delaware Veterans Blvd., Milford, Delaware 19963.
