Gary Lee Pretty Paint passed over to the other side of the camp on January 27, 2025. He was born to Perry Pretty Paint and Grace Three Irons Rock Above on April 7, 1941, but was raised by Pera Not Afraid and his Black Lodge Family. His Indian name was Baachiliileetaash "The Fearless One". He was a descendant of Chief Wolf Bow, Big Sky, Fair Bullseye and Pretty Paint. He was a member of the Greasy Mouth Clan and a child of Big Lodge.
Gary graduated from Hardin High School, and while there his 1960 cross-country team went on to be inaugurated into the Montana Hall of Fame. Before college, he served a mission through the Latter-day Saints as a missionary at Crow Agency. After, he went to Haskell Institute and received an associate degree in printing, then went to college through BYU Utah University to get his apprentice degree. Using his associate, he worked for Dessert News and Tribute News as the person who ran the press machine and eventually retired from there.
He came back to the Crow Nations to do odds and ends to help his people. He spoke for the people, he worked for Crow Housing Authority, he was an advisor, and he worked amongst the Crow Nation. He was active in Native American culture and loved Pow Wows, Hand Games, and pretty much everything involving singing, teaching them to his children and grandchildren. In fact, his son and him traveled to different states to participate with the Crow Agency singers in singing competitions. He was on the Pow Wow trail all the time.
