Webb-Shinkle Mortuary - ClearwaterGary Craig Sandberg, of Clearwater, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 72. He was known to most as Craig for much of his adult life, but to his family, he was known as Gary (or Gar).
Gary was born May 22, 1953, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He spent his childhood in Glenburn, North Dakota, as well as Gillette, Cheyenne, and Casper, Wyoming. He graduated from Kelly Walsh High School in Casper, Wyoming, Class of 1971, and later graduated from Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, Class of 1975. While in college, he worked in construction, and afterwards, he worked in a variety of marketing and business management positions.
In 1977, he married Diana Bonfiglio, and together they built a life centered on family and shared devotion. They made their home in Ottawa until 1984, living in Lamar, Missouri and Park City, Kansas, until moving near Clearwater in 1986. In 1990, Craig began working with Capper’s Insurance Agency, where he remained employed until his retirement in 2015. To keep busy after retirement, Craig took a job at Goddard Walmart, where he made some new friends as he waited for Diana to retire. Diana retired in 2022, and Craig soon rejoined her in retirement.
Craig was a longtime member of the Clearwater Church of the Nazarene. He loved his time in church with his family and friends. He was a loving husband and a devoted father. Craig loved his family, and he often traveled to spend time with his parents, especially after retiring.
Craig was an avid fisherman, especially at the family cottage in Manistee, Michigan; for many years, a summer trip to fish and see family was all but guaranteed. There will be a family memorial in Manistee in July 2026, his remains will be interred there at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents: Fay (Walters) Sandberg in 2022 and LeRoy Sandberg in 2024.
He is survived by his loving wife, Diana Sandberg of Clearwater, Kansas; his children, Carl Sandberg and Miranda Sandberg, both of Wichita, Kansas; and his brothers, Ted (Charlaine) Sandberg of Chico, California, and Kirby Sandberg of Bremerton, Washington. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as their children. And lots of cousins.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, April 25, 2PM at Clearwater Church of the Nazarene.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Clearwater Church of the Nazarene 529 Ross Ave, Clearwater, KS 67026 in Gary’s memory.
