Virginia Lee (Schmidt) Engborg, 89, of Plainville, Kansas, went home to be with the Lord on March 6, 2026, at Redbud Village in Plainville.

She was born on December 23, 1936, in Leesburg, VA to Clarence A. and Nora (Lancaster) Schmidt. She graduated from McPherson High School and attended Ottawa University.

Virginia married Paul Engborg, Jr. on July 8, 1956, at the First Baptist Church in McPherson, KS, where they continued living until moving to Plainville in 1963. They were blessed with three daughters, Julie, Diane, and Amy, whom she loved raising. Virginia was a devoted and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

For many years she enjoyed needlework, craft projects, and sewing, which included making many bridesmaid dresses. Later she and Paul took up woodworking, creating treasured family keepsakes.

Virginia attended the First Baptist Church in McPherson all the years of her youth, faithfully attending Sunday school, worship services, Baptist Youth Fellowship, evening services, and choir practices. Later she began teaching children’s Sunday School and assisting with Vacation Bible School, continuing her service at the First Christian Church after their move to Plainville.

She served her community as a library board member for 8 years, a member of Plainville’s hospital auxiliary, and a volunteer at the hospital gift shop. In addition to her many activities in the church, Virginia will also be remembered as one who acted out her deep faith by driving others to appointments and church services, delivering cinnamon rolls and meals, visiting friends in their homes, the hospital, or the nursing home, and always lifting others in prayer.

Virginia’s greatest joy was being with family and friends, and she treasured the many Schmidt family reunions held in Estes Park, CO.

Virginia is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Julie (Tom) Melton, Diane (Ken) DePinto, all of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Amy (Keith) Becker of Plainville; sisters, Shirley Short of Vancouver, WA and LaNora Hale (Dave) of Sulphur, OK; brothers, Ramon Schmidt (Glenda) of Lawrence, KS and Richard Schmidt (Elaine) of Sulphur, OK; sisters-in-law, Tschudy Schmidt and Betty Schmidt; grandchildren, Leah (John) Goodrich, David (Bethany) Melton, Eric (Claire) DePinto, Andrew (Cherish) DePinto, Aaron (Aubrey) Becker, and Kyle (Ashley) Becker; great-grandchildren Ava, Billy, and Mikey Goodrich, Elijah, Norah, Hudson, Caroline, and Malachi Melton, Nolan, Jude, Scout, and Wesley DePinto, August and Hazel DePinto, Elinn, Jayna, and Henley Becker; and many nieces and nephews.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Engborg; infant sister, Anne Schmidt; brother, John Schmidt; parents, Clarence and Nora Schmidt; step-mother, Marie Schmidt; brother-in-law, Tom Short; and great-grandson, Lawson Becker.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 11AM at the First Christian Church in Plainville. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. A book signing time with the family receiving friends will be Friday, 5-6:30PM at the church.
