Gary L. Shirk, born on August 8, 1941, in Kenton, OH, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Lima Memorial Hospital. He was the beloved son of the late Russell and Dorothy (Cannode) Shirk. On March 16, 1962, Gary married Kathalene "Cappy" (Puckett) Shirk, who preceded him in death on November 16, 2011. They were married for 49 wonderful years.
Gary is survived by his three devoted daughters: Sherry (Ron) Fickert of Houston, OH; Tammy (Herb) Hooker of Hooksett, NH; and Kim (Mark) Plesec of Findlay, OH. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren Lee (Jess) Jury, Tyler (Mason) Fickert, Dustin (Jackie) Fickert, Ben Hooker, Zach Hooker, Sydney Plesec and Ethan Plesec and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Peggy (Mike) Fry of Celina. Gary was preceded in death by his four brothers: Russell Jr., Jack, Donald, and Richard.
A 1959 graduate of Kenton High School, Gary served in the Ohio Army Reserve, where he discovered his passion for cooking. His dedication to his fellow veterans continued long after his service, as he became a passionate supporter of the Amvets, helping to raise funds for numerous veteran causes.
Gary's love for music was a defining part of his life. He was a talented musician, playing the drums and singing with the "Country Playboys," which later went on to front country music legend Loretta Lynn. He later performed with "Country Expressions" and delighted audiences with karaoke performances in Winterhaven, FL, and various venues around Indian Lake. Even after he could no longer play the drums, Gary continued to share his love of music, often singing during the summer season at the Tilton Hilton, always carrying his song list everywhere he
went. He created joyful memories for all who listened, sharing his passion for music until his final years.
In 1971, Gary began his career with Morton Buildings, where he served as plant manager from 1980 until his retirement in 2004. His hard work and leadership earned him the respect of his colleagues and a reputation for excellence.
Upon retiring, Gary and Cappy opened Shirk's Hot Dogs & Bar-B-Que at Indian Lake, known for its mouthwatering chicken, ribs, and orange twist ice cream by the lake. For many years, they created a warm and welcoming spot where locals and visitors alike could gather, enjoy great food, and share stories. To this day, friends reminisce about Gary's cooking and ice cream with his daughters.
Gary was a people collector-he never met a stranger. Whether he was buying, selling, collecting, or simply striking up a conversation, he was always in search of a deal and a good story. Later in life, Gary's faith became an important part of who he was. He found joy in sharing his faith with close friends and took comfort in his relationship with God.
Gary's warmth, generosity, and love for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a devoted Ohio State fan, always cheering on the Buckeyes with passion. His legacy of kindness and community spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Gary's final resting place will be with Cappy in Lima at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Amvets Post #1994, 417 W. Espy St., Kenton, OH. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will be invited to share stories, music, and memories of a truly remarkable man. The family has entrusted the SCHINDEWOLF-STOUT-CRATES FUNERAL HOME with arrangements. Online condolences can be expressed to the family by visiting stoutcrates.com.
