Gary Smith

It is with a sense of deep sorrow yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Gary Smith, who departed this world on Thursday, October 23, 2025, in Opelika, Alabama. Born on April 4, 1953, in Valley, Alabama, Gary embraced life with a spirit that was as vibrant as it was generous.

Gary dedicated a significant portion of his professional life to West Point Pepperell, where he worked with diligence and pride before retiring from a career that spanned many fulfilling years. His contributions during this time were marked not just by the work he did but by the friendships he forged and the respect he garnered from those around him.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Gary found joy in the simpler pleasures of life. Among his fondest pastimes was the camaraderie he shared while playing dominoes with his best friends, Jimmy and Larry. Each game carried with it the laughter and shared stories that only true friendship can engender. Additionally, Gary's love for all animals was evident; he regarded them not merely as companions but as cherished co-inhabitants of this world, deserving of kindness and respect.

Gary leaves behind a loving family that includes his devoted sisters, Jolene LaFrancois (Harvey) and Judy Morgan, along with his brother-in-law, Dale Willcutt and wife, Nell. He was also a cherished uncle to several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, whose lives he touched with his warmth and wisdom.

He will be reunited in spirit with those who predeceased him, namely his beloved parents, Arnold D. and Margie R. Smith, and his sister, Patricia Gail Willcutt. Together they form an eternal bond, one that underscores the love that transcends the boundaries of life and death.

As we reflect on Gary's life, we find solace in knowing that his memory will be honored in a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date. Such gatherings serve to remind us of the joy he brought into our lives and the indelible mark he leaves upon our hearts. Though he may no longer walk among us, Gary Smith’s legacy of love, friendship, and kindness will endure. He will be missed profoundly but remembered with unending affection.
