Gary Crawford Smith, age 68, passed away unexpectedly on December 14, 2025. Gary was born on August 30, 1957, in Newport News, Virginia. His family later moved to Cullowhee, North Carolina, where he grew up after relocating there in the sixth grade.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, James Andrew “Jimmy” Smith, and his mother, Helen Crawford Smith.
He leaves behind the love of his life and his wife of 44 years, Karen Hopkins Smith, and his daughter, Ali Smith, who he thought the world of and would have done anything for. Gary was endlessly proud of Ali and never missed an opportunity to brag about her to anyone who would listen.
Gary owned and operated Jimmy’s Mini Market in Tuckasegee, North Carolina, for 42 years before retiring four years ago. He was deeply grateful for the people who supported and helped sustain the business over the years—especially the people of Tuckasegee, whom he loved dearly.
A lifelong sports fan, Gary had a special love for baseball. He was a proud 1975 Rebel graduate and played second base on the team that won the State Championship that same year.
Gary loved people and treasured time spent with family and friends. If you knew Gary, you know he never met a stranger—to know him was to love him. He was kind, selfless, and had the biggest heart, always wearing a smile and looking for ways to help others. Above all, Gary loved God and lived his life with faith, generosity, and joy.
Services will be held at Appalachian Funeral Home in Sylva, North Carolina. Visitation will take place on Friday, December 19th from 1:00–2:00 p.m., with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m.
