Gary passed away unexpectedly at his home in Merritt, Michigan, on Thursday, March 27, 2025 at the age of 63. He was born to the late Richard and Sharon (Miller) Steffen on November 1, 1961 in Detroit, Michigan, at the Saratoga Community Hospital. He grew up in Warren, Michigan, and attended the East Detroit Schools. He later moved to Peck, Michigan, where he raised his family. In 2010, he moved to Merritt, Michigan, where he was surrounded by the woods and wildlife, everything he loved.
Gary was a skilled carpenter, woodcarver and could fix just about anything. He was fashionably known for his Canadian Tuxedo and always had a vest on. Later in life, he enjoyed the companionship of his dog, Charlie.
Gary is survived by his son, Gary Robin Steffen Jr. (Casey); daughter, Jennifer Marie Steffen (Paul); dog, Charlie; siblings, Gail Shoup, Richard Steffen (the late Brenda), Karen Steffen (Paul McClelland) and Robert Steffen (Roxanne); brother-in-law, Kevin Hill; many nieces and nephews and his previous partner for many years, Deb Hanaford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Denise Hill.
Celebration of Life for Gary will be held on Friday, April 11, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. at the Gephart Funeral Home in Bay City. The family will be present to receive visitors on Friday at the Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the Celebration of Life.
