He owned and operated an electrical company (G.T. Electrical) until he retired. He was a Vietnam Veteran and served in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, 3 O/S BARS, and Sharpshooter (Rifle M-16).
He is survived by his wife Judy Thompson, daughter Hannah (Kalay Jones), son Randy Thompson, step children Julie and Ralph Cook, sisters Jane (Bill Dixon), and Lynda Thompson, special sister in laws Brenda and Linda. He also leaves behind many grandkids and great-grandkids that he loved dearly. He is proceeded in death by his parents Harry and Lois Thompson, sons Marty and Chuck Thompson, step-daughter Rhonda Besse, brother Ray Lanier, sisters Pat Greene, Judy Burnette and Marie Hancock, and granddaughter Allison Wolfe.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00pm on 08/11/2023 at Tribute and Tallent Funeral Home in Charlotte, NC. Reverend Danny Lanier will Officiate.

I first met Gary at my first electrical job at Reid Electric right out of highschool in1979.
He took me under his wing and taught me all kind of electrical and life skills to which I am eternally thankfull. We had many good times working in town and out of town. He always amazed me how he could take a set of blueprints and walk on a new job and know exactly what to do, quick and efficent. We worked hard and played hard. I have so many fond memories of his sayings and jokes.
Judy, I am praying for you and your family, He will be surly missed.
