Gary Lynn Wisness was born to Lester and Gladys (Felland) Wisness on November 23, 1947, in Williston, ND. He passed away peacefully at his home on June 3, 2025.
Gary was raised on the family farm in the Keene community with his three siblings, Paul, Jane, and Milo. He was baptized into the Christian faith at Keene First Lutheran Church. At an early age he was diagnosed with special needs. At the age of 8 he attended Grafton State School to get special help for his specific needs. While in Grafton, he enjoyed participating in Special Olympics and attending prom. Gary loved the farm and all its activities so every Christmas and summer his parents would bring him home so he could enjoy the farm. He loved to ride his bike and ride on all the farm equipment and enjoyed the farm animals. His extended family always made him feel included in all activities. He loved to look at farm equipment in magazines and could identify each manufacturer and the type of equipment. His favorite was John Deere. Gary also loved to eat; with his favorite being hamburgers, fries, and coke.
Gary was a beloved member of the Opportunity Foundation family for over 40 years, having joined the agency in 1984. Throughout his time with OFI, Gary brought joy, humor, and warmth to everyone who knew him. His love of farming, especially anything John Deere, was well known and proudly displayed in his room. He was always happiest when going for drives to look at tractors and relaxing with a Western on TV. Before retiring in 2008, Gary worked at the OFI recycling center and on a lawn and snow crew. With a handshake and a grin, Gary made sure to always ask your name whenever you crossed his path. He made everyone feel like a friend the moment he met them. His support staff took him to Bible Camp, community events such as the circus and parades, and visits to his mother in Watford City. Holidays were always special to him. He thrived with all the excellent support provided by his devoted and dedicated help from the Opportunity Foundation staff.
Gary's kindness, unforgettable smile, and enthusiasm for life made a lasting impact on his friends and support staff. His presence brought countless smiles, and he will always be remembered as a truly special part of the OFI community.
Gary is survived by his brother, Paul (Sandi) Wisness; his sister, Jane (Dwight) Mangel, and sister-in law, Julie Wisness; as well as many nieces and nephews who were dear to him. Gary was a special part of our family, taught us unconditional love, and will be deeply missed.
Gary will join his parents Lester and Gladys, his brother Milo, and nephews, Levi Charles, Joshua Glenn and Russell Paul in heaven.

A special service will be held in First Lutheran church in Keene, ND on Friday, June 6, 2025 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Peder Stenslie will be officiating. Burial will be in the Keene Lutheran Cemetery in Keene, North Dakota. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 5, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home Chapel in Williston, ND with a Family Service, open to the public at 6:00 PM.
