Gary Wolz Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A. - Cumberland on Feb. 7, 2024.
Gary Orvil Wolz passed away unexpectedly Friday, February 2, 2024. Born November 21, 1962 in Cumberland, Maryland, Gary was the son of the late Orvil Wolz and Kathleen (Briner) Wolz. Gary is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Dona (Middleton) Wolz; eldest daughter, Olivia Wolz; and youngest daughter, Mia Wolz and her boyfriend, Seth Baer. Gary is also survived by his sister-in-law, Gina (Middleton) Ward and husband, Thomas Ward; in-laws, Mary (Cross) Middleton and Donald Middleton; special cousin and honorary big sister, Mary Lynch; and the light of his life, his Boston Terrier Gus Wolz.
Gary was a graduate of Bishop Walsh School and proud member of the 1978 City Championship Football Team. He also graduated from Frostburg State University, originally in 1994 and again in 1997 with his Master's Degree in Psychology.
Gary never met a stranger who didn't later become a friend. Gary had an enormous community of companions from so many of his different passions. He connected with others through his love of music (especially the Grateful Dead and Dead & Co.), comic books, old horror memorabilia, and Magic cards. Gary enjoyed podcasting with his friends from the Calling All Heroes Podcast and playing Magic with the Nerd Herd at Claytons' Collectibles. Above all, he was dedicated to those that he loved.
Gary was a long-time bartender at Oscar's Restaurant for 26 years, where he served many frequent customers who also became life-long friends. Gary was most recently employed at Bontay Business Products, and previously worked at Friends Aware, where he treated all of his clients like family. An avid cyclist, Gary completed the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal trails with Dona. Gary had an incredible green thumb, and every year he made the best salsa from the tomatoes and peppers from his garden.
Gary was involved in radio programming at his alma mater, and recently joined the WFWM board. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Gary's name to WFWM. Checks can be made payable to the "FSU Foundation – WFWM" at 101 Braddock Road, Frostburg, MD 21532. Online donations can be made at www.wfwm.org/give.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, on Thursday February, 29 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., with a time of sharing starting at 6:00 P.M.

I worked with Gary in the mid-80's in a retail store in Laurel MD. He was one of the kindest people I ever met. At the time, he was sharing an apartment with another guy, who decided to move out and leave Gary stuck there, not able to make the rent payments on his own....so long story short, I offered him a room in my mobile home until he could work things out, which was a couple of months. My best memory of Gary was having him over to my parents house for a BBQ on the fourth of July. Gary made himself at home and my parents loved him. Afterward, we took my car and parked on the upper deck of the mall and sat on the hood of my car, leaning back against the windshield and watching the fireworks. I lost touch with Gary and am saddened to hear of his passing. Thoughts and prayers to all that loved him...

Gary was one of the few people from my Dad's side of the family that did not make me feel like an outsider. It just saddens me that this feels like that part of my family tree is gone. You were a good person Gary!
