I started as a member of the fire service on December 8, 1965, as a member of the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department. My membership card was signed by Gary Echols as President. The next year, he became the Chief. I had the occasion to run a number of calls with him during my short tenure with the LPVFD since I worked in town and was generally available in the daytime. I moved away in 1966 and had little contact with him after that but I still have fond memories of riding the 1948 and 1963 Macks and taking my first fire training there. Rest in peace Gary and thank you for your service.
