Gavin Diah Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors on Mar. 19, 2026.
Bruce Springsteen's number one fan passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026. Gavin Diah was a father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many. He died at home at the age of 77.
Gavin lived a life worthy of a memoir. He was born on April 6, 1948, in Johannesburg, South Africa, to Dulabh and Dhani Diah. As a teenager, he developed a love for comic books and music – both of which inspired his move to the U.S. in his 20s. Gavin's American dream began with a hitchhike from New York City to California. From there, his path led him to the mountains of North Carolina, where he managed a motel, then to St. Mary's, Georgia, where he opened a beach club called Snorkels – before ultimately finding his home in Fernandina Beach, Florida.
Besides being the greatest dad in the world, Gavin had many hobbies – organizing the garage, going to concerts, perusing the open box section at Lowe's, and starting projects he fully intended to finish later – but nothing brought him more joy than beach walks with his beloved mini schnauzer, Maddie. Maddie passed away in January 2022, and it wasn't until the arrival of his granddaughter years later that he found his way back to the beach.
He was a man of routine in the best way. Gavin's daily happy hour consisted of an IPA, a handful of peanuts, and PBS NewsHour, followed by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. His truck playlist alternated between Tom Petty Radio and E Street Radio. You could find him at the farmers' market most Saturday mornings, and every Sunday evening he would text his daughter, 'are you watching 60 Minutes?' Nightly FaceTime calls with his granddaughter Bowen were non-negotiable-and his favorite part of the day.
As much as Gavin loved Bruce (& Colbert), he loved his family more. His brother Bhula was his best friend, sometimes business partner, and right-hand man on any house project. Gavin was Papa to many but rebranded to Good Buddy when Bowen was born in 2024. If you ask his grandkids, they'd tell you he was the coolest man they knew. If you ask his daughter Bree, she'd tell you he set the standard.
When he was diagnosed with cancer in April 2025, people showed up for him in a big way. If you're reading this, know that it meant the world to him. He was overwhelmed by the love – but his family wasn't surprised. Everyone loved Gavin. He was the only one who didn't quite realize it. In his last year, his nieces and nephew, Nina, Maya, and Tej, stepped up to be his caretakers and advocates. He was so grateful and very proud of them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dulabh and Dhani Diah; his sisters, Prabha Odhav and Ranju Parag; his brother-in-law, Pyush Parag; and his beloved mini schnauzer, Maddie.
He is survived by his best friend and ex-wife, Brenda Diah, with whom he shared three dogs, Lucie, Zoie, and Archie; his daughters, Bree Diah Welch (Ben) and Liska Hamm (Brent); stepson, Heath Zeigler, daughter-in-law, Grace Zeigler; his brothers, Bhula Diah (Prabha) and Mahendra Diah (Kajal); his brother-in-law, Thakor Odhav; his grandchildren, Bowen Welch, Hanna Zeigler, Darian Zeigler, Watson Zeigler, Jack Hamm, and Morgan Hamm, of whom he was so proud; as well as many nieces and nephews, including Nina Lioy, Maya Diah, Tej Diah, Seema, Bina, Pritesh, Vanesh, Vimal, and Neelam; and dear friends who were like family, Mina Patel, Jim Burleigh, Glenn Briski, and Ronnie Patel, among many others.
He will be missed more than he ever knew.
A celebration of Gavin's life will be held on March 27 from 3pm – 5pm at Mocama Beer Company in Fernandina Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gavin's memory to Nassau Humane Society.
