Gay Mothershed Obituary
July 9, 1937 - May 13, 2023
Gay Mothershed died peacefully in her home in Black Mountain N.C. She was born in Concord N.C., the oldest daughter of John and Elvie Mothershed, and was baptized and nurtured by the members of Second Presbyterian Church. She was active in the local youth group as well as on the Presbytery's Youth Council and helped clear trails at the new Camp Grier. She graduated from Concord High School before attending Flora MacDonald College from which she graduated cum laude in 1959. She continued her call to service to Christ's church through a graduate degree from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond Va. followed by distinguished service in the Presbyterian Church USA in local churches, presbyteries and on national boards and committees. Gay is survived by her sister, Linda Shrader (Richard) of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; nephews Richard Shrader (Michele Martin) of Watkinsville, Ga. and John Shrader of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; and cousin, Patricia Nichols (Wayne) of Concord N.C.
A memorial service will be held at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, 117 Montreat Road, Black Mountain, N.C. on Sunday afternoon June 4 at 2 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The family asks those who wish to honor Gay's life to consider contributions to Union Presbyterian Seminary (https://upsem.edu), to Black Mountain Presbyterian Church (https://bmpcnc.org/give) or to a charity of your choice.

Oh, the energy and positiveness she displayed all the time! She was fun to be with and one could feel close to her immediately. She was warm, personable, and shared her basic competence and wisdom when and wherever she might be. She loved life, living, the Church and all others around her! She mattered! She made a lot of difference in so many wonderful ways. Heaven grows richer while earth grows poorer.
