Gaylon Charles Sponaugle, 90, of Franklin, WV, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2025 at Pendleton Manor in Franklin, WV.
Gaylon was born on January 27, 1935 in Pendleton County, West Virginia, a son of the late Ray and Pauline (Wimer) Sponaugle.
Gaylon attended West Virginia University, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture. Following graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army where he served in Germany. Gaylon went on to serve as County Executive Director with the USDA in Pendleton County, his career spanning over 30 years.
As a younger man, he enjoyed hunting and traveling with his wife, Ruby, on camping trips. His greatest satisfactions came from working on the family farm and tending to his flock of sheep and cattle.
Gaylon was a member of Walnut Street United Methodist Church and the former Harper Chapel United Methodist Church. Additionally, he was a former member of the Blue Grass Ruritan Club and Franklin Ruritan Club, as well as a member of the Pendleton County Farm Bureau.
A man of few words with a witty and dry humor, Gaylon will also be remembered for his integrity, selfless nature, and as one who always placed his family first.
In addition to his parents, Gaylon was preceded in death by his brothers, Olin, Berlie, and Merle.
Surviving family members include his wife of 67 years, Ruby Gail (Harper) Sponaugle; a son, Kevin Charles Sponaugle and wife, Pamela of Franklin, WV; grandson, Kyle Charles Sponaugle of Morgantown, WV; and great-granddaughter, Juniper Jade Sponaugle.
A funeral service will be held on 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at Blue Grass United Methodist Church with Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Grass Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
