Gene was born November 25, 1948 in Youngstown, Ohio , a son of John S. and Helen (Popovich) Babik.
A 1966 graduate of Wilson High School, Gene was active in athletics and held the school record in long jump. He graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor's degree in Marketing. Gene had a successful career in business and lived in Colorado from 1982 and moving back to the area in the late 90's. He worked at Mahoning and Columbiana Training Association as a Business and Resource Networking Manager prior to his retirement.
Gene was of the Catholic Faith and was a member of Sokols. While in Colorado, Gene was an avid skier and enjoyed bike riding as well as horseback riding. Upon returning to Youngstown, Gene found enjoyment golfing, working out at the 'Y', going the Butler and being outdoors. Gene loved animals, they held a special place in his heart and he dedicated his life to rescuing and providing a loving home for numerous cats and dogs.
Gene enjoyed watching football and was a loyal fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, YSU Penguins and the Cleveland Browns.
He leaves one sister, Evelyn Babik of Struthers, and nieces and nephews: John (Dianne) Trevis, Pam Trevis, Kim Trevis, Lisa M. Berman-Yuhas, Jared (Caroline) Babik, Kristin Babik, Kati Babik, Michael J. Colucci and Gabrielle Colucci, grand - nephews Trey Trevis, Christian Trevis, grand-nieces Chiara L. Berman-Yuhas , and Hunter Nieznay.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John W. Babik and infant James Babik; and one sister Barbara Trevis.
Friends may call on Thursday, August 28, 2025 at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. for viewing. To honor and celebrate Gene, family and friends are invited to wear jeans, Buckeye, Penguin and Browns apparel, your favorite concert shirt and/or a bb hat.
On Friday, August 29, 2025 friends can go directly to the church for a funeral Mass at Christ Our Savior Parish/St. Nicholas Church in Struthers at 11:00 a.m.
Donations can be made in Gene's name to Animal Charity 8469 Southern Blvd. Bldg. 3, Youngstown, Ohio 44514 or Healthy Hearts and Paws 909 Martin Luther King Blvd. SW Warren, Ohio 44485.

I was very sad to hear about Gene's sudden passing. I have known Gene since high school ( Woodrow Wilson )
He was in my older brother Paul's class and became a family friend. In later years I would only see Gene occasionally when I visited Youngstown, but maintained long distance phone relationship with him. I always admired his commitment to rescuing and caring for homeless animals, a compassionate act. He was also a patron of mine and bought quite a few of my paintings, which I was grateful for. On behalf of my brother Paul and Tim, I would like to extend our sympathy to his sister. He was a fine man and a good friend and will be missed. Robert Sabo
