Gene Shelby Hardin, 82, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at his home in Louisville, Kentucky.
Gene was born on March 6, 1944, in Taylorsville, Kentucky, to the late Jack and Betsy Hardin. He grew up with a strong work ethic and a lively spirit that stayed with him throughout his life.
A natural entrepreneur and true hustler, Gene had a remarkable ability to make something out of nothing. Through determination and hard work, he became the longtime owner of Doug and Holly’s Coffee Shop and The Steak Palace, where he welcomed countless customers over the years and built lasting friendships within the community.
Above all, Gene was a devoted family man. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who cared deeply for his family and always put them first. Those who knew him will remember his quick wit and playful personality—he had a great sense of humor and loved to joke around with the people he cared about.
Gene enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He loved dancing with his beloved wife, Lorie, listening to country music, and Halloween was always his favorite holiday. Each year he looked forward to seeing children dressed in costumes knocking on his door. In his spare time, Gene could often be found admiring classic cars, going yard-selling in search of a good find, or simply enjoying a well-earned nap.
Gene will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, but his humor, hardworking spirit, and love for his family will be remembered always.
Gene is preceded in death by his loving wife, Lorie Hardin; parents, Jack Hardin and Betsy Gordon Hardin; granddaughter, Brittney Hardin; and son-in-law, Bobby Lowe.
Left to cherish his memory, Gene is survived by his loving daughter, Holly Lowe; 2 sons, Shawn Hardin and Doug Hardin (Angel); 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and close friends.
Visitation for Mr. Gene Hardin will be held on Monday, March 23, 2026, from 10 AM to 2 PM at Louisville Memorial Gardens West Funeral Home, 4400 Dixie Highway, Louisville, Kentucky. Entombment at Louisville Memorial Gardens West will follow the visitation.
