Gene Hogge Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Weymouth Funeral Home & Crematory on Dec. 20, 2025.
Gene Rexford Hogge, 77, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, December 12, 2025, in the comfort of his home with his loving wife by his side.

Born in 1948, Gene's story began with extraordinary odds. Born three months early and weighing less than two pounds, he was so fragile that doctors could only estimate his weight – just 32 ounces. Developing pneumonia, his chances of survival were slim, yet he quickly became known as a medical miracle. For 52 days, tiny Gene fought in an incubator, while his parents were only able to see him twice – one of those precious moments being the day before they finally brought him home.

Gene was a proud, lifelong resident of Newport News, VA. He dedicated 50 years of his life to public service as a Code Enforcement Officer – 30 years with the City of Newport News and 20 years with York County – before retiring in 2017. His work was more than a job; it was his passion. Gene took pride in doing things the right way and found joy in helping others, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and integrity.

Outside of work, Gene had a love for history and could often be found reading or watching documentaries. He was also an antique car enthusiast, never missing a chance to attend car shows with his best friend and nephew, Everett. At home, his happiest moments were spent with his loyal companion, Murphy, who was always by his side.

Gene was a devoted and active member of Denbigh Baptist Church, living out his faith with humility and grace.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William McDonald "Willie" Hogge and Ruby Edward Cash Hogge; his brothers, William Everett "Punksy" Hogge and Gayle McDonald Hogge; his nephew, William Everett Hogge II; and his beloved canine companion, Murphy Darnell Hogge.

He leaves behind cherished memories with his loving wife, Sylvia Delois Hogge; step daughter, Audra Charity; nephew, Roger Hogge; and a host of extended family and dear friends.

Gene Rexford Hogge's laughter, wisdom, and gentle spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Denbigh Baptist Church by Rev. Thor Williams. The family will receive friends for a Visitation and Reception following the Service at the church.
