Gene Russell Holbrook, passed away July 17, 2024 at the age of 84. Beloved son of the late Alfred and Ella (nee Smith) Holbrook.
Gene is survived by his loving children Joseph Holbrook (Michelle), James Holbrook (Louis), Damian Holbrook, and Christopher Holbrook. He is also survived by his adoring grandchildren, Bryan (Daniel), Dylan, and Simon, as well as his adoring companion, Regina DeBarberie. Gene was predeceased by his dear wife Helen (nee Bell) Holbrook.
Gene was an avid baseball fan, having played first base (as a rare lefty) in the Washington farm league. Following that, he entered the Navy and subsequently served on the USS Forrestal before becoming an original crew member and plank holder of the USS Kitty Hawk supercarrier during the Cold War.
It was at that time that he met his future wife, Helen, at a USO dance while on furlough in Philadelphia. A lover of comedy, particularly the TV shows M*A*S*H, Monty Python and early Saturday Night Live, Gene will be remembered as much for his infectious sense of humor and laughter as for his unending kindness.
Relatives and friends are invited to Gene’s viewing on Sunday July 21, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and Monday July 22, from 9:45 AM to 10:45 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA followed by his funeral service at 11:00 AM. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, 626 Baily Road, Yeadon, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gene’s name to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital - https://www.stjude.org/give.html - would be greatly appreciated.
