Gene Allen Smith, 65, of Fairview and formerly of Girard, died Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at Manchester Presbyterian Home.
He was born on September 6, 1956 to Elton and Martha (Blank) Smith in Erie, PA. He attended Rice Avenue Union High School, graduating in 1974. After graduation Gene attended the University of Pittsburgh in Titusville where he studied Physical Therapy for 2 years and worked at Erie Osteopathic Hospital as an orderly for a year. He then worked at General Electric in the apprentice program beginning in 1977 and graduating in 1981. This began his career at General Electric, working as a machinist. Later working there as a supervisor in Building #6 until the fall of 1991. Gene decided to return to school, but this time as a teacher in January of 1992. Teaching Tool & Die for the 10th, 11th and 12th grade students at Erie County Tech School. He also taught night school for adults while working there until 1997. He later worked at the Crawford County Vocational Technical School as a Precision Machining Instructor from 1997 until his retirement in 2014.
Gene played the trombone for the Concert Band of NW PA and Millcreek Area Community Band. He played the ukulele and attended Grace Church and was active in the worship team at Grace. He was also a member of the A.F. Dobler Hose Band during high school as well as the Fire Company.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elton Lee Smith.
Gene is survived by his wife, Patricia F. (Exley) Smith, whom he married on July 23, 1984; his mother, Martha J. Smith; sisters, Brenda L. Smith, Karen D. Carll (Robert) and Rebecca G. Hecker (Chris); and many nieces and nephews.
Family and close friends may call on at the Edder Funeral Home, Girard, on Friday from 12:00 noon to the time of the Memorial Service there at 2PM with Pastor Jim Scarpitti officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Edinboro Camp and Retreat Center, 12940 Fry Road, Edinboro, PA 16412.
