Gene Ross Smith, 88, affectionately known as Gene, was born on September 30, 1936, in Whitewater, Kansas. He died on September 19, 2025, at NMC Health in Newton, Kansas, leaving behind a legacy of quiet faith and deep love for his family.
Gene owned and operated a motel for most of his career. In addition to this, he also contributed to his community by working in local mobile home factories. His commitment to his work was matched only by his devotion to his family and friends. He greatly looked forward to spending time with them, which served as a testament to the warmth he exuded in his personal life.
A proud veteran, Gene served his country in the United States Navy, embodying the values of service and dedication throughout his life. His faith played a central role in his life, and his church community, along with his family, held a special place in his heart.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Gladys M. (Schmidt) Downen.He is also survived by several those that call him "Uncle" as well as a host of friends and family. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo Milton Smith, and Ruth Bland.
Visitation will be held at Golden Plains Free Methodist Church in Newton, Kansas, on September 23, 2025, from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Service at 10:00 AM. A Graveside Service will take place on the same day at Restlawn Gardens of Memory in Rural Newton. Pastor Jean Bergren will preside.
Memorial donations may be made to Golden Plains Free Methodist Church and left in Care of Petersen Funeral Home.
