Gene Trainor Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rhiel Funeral Home & Cremation Services - Durand on Dec. 15, 2025.
Gene Autry Trainor passed away peacefully at home on December 11, 2025, at the age of 84. He was surrounded by the love and support of his family. Gene was a social man who loved people. Regardless of family, friend or stranger, he always had a story or joke to tell.

Gene was born on July 15th, 1941 to Dale and Fern Trainor. He lived and attended school in Elmwood, WI. He played high school football and loved sports. Gene grew up farming with his parents. After high school he had a variety of jobs including truck driving, construction and ending his career as a custodian at UW-Eau Claire.

While at a dance, he saw and met the love of his life, Maxine Bauer. As the story has been told countless times, he stated right then and there that he was going to marry that girl. And he did. On October 15th, 1960, they were married at St. Mary's Parish in Durand, WI. Gene and Maxine made Durand their home where they remained, with an open door for family and friends to gather.

Spending time at the lake fishing, going for pontoon rides, playing cards and enjoying campfires has led to many cherished memories for family and friends. Hunting and trap shooting were among his favorite things to do with his sons and grandsons. One of Gene's last wishes was to participate in "Opening Day" one more time. With the help of his family, he found the strength to put on the blaze orange again. While not successful, the time spent with his sons and grandsons was priceless. He was always proud to shoot a big buck but even more proud to see one of his children or grandchildren have a successful hunt.

Attending and supporting his children and grandchildren's games and events was also a favorite way for Gene and Maxine to spend their time for many, many years. He also enjoyed shooting pool, golf, playing softball and coaching his children in baseball, softball and basketball. A special and proud moment was when he coached his daughters slow pitch softball team to a state championship in Superior, WI.

The biggest accomplishment of his life was in creating a big, loving family. The love and pride that he had for his family was unmatched. Gene is survived by Maxine, their 5 children: Tom Trainor (Tammy Cooper), Dawn Daleiden (Ed), Renee Prissel, Deb Keys (Lane Berenschot) and Scott Trainor (Sandy). Gene was blessed with an abundance of grandchildren that include: Rachel Radle (Derek), Ryan Trainor, John Daleiden (Kristin), David Daleiden (Rosie), Michael Daleiden (Stephanie), Amanda Meek (Robbie), Ashley Murtaugh (Chris Evans), Stephanie Prissel (Ross Dorwin), Thomas Prissel (Emily), Chelsey Rademacher (Steven), Kasey Keys, Brett Keys (Gina), Christopher Keys (Allyson), Spencer Trainor and Kyle Trainor. Gene is also survived by 26 great-grandchildren that were the apple of his eye. He created a unique and loving relationship with each of his children and grandchildren that will live on in the memories and good times they shared. He is also survived by lifelong friends, Jr and Bev Weissinger, who have had countless adventures and memories together.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law Brian Prissel, grandson-in-law Colin Murtaugh and a great-granddaughter Abigail Prissel.

The family would like to extend a deep and sincere thank you to the team at St Croix Hospice. We would not have made it through without all the help and support. They are truly a blessing.

In true Gene style, there will be a Celebration of Life on January 3rd from 1-5, at the Durand Rod and Gun Club.

Gene was one of the most fun people we´ve ever met ! He became a friend of ours at Durand´s golf course in about 1971 and we shared many, many smiles and laughter due to Gene´s great personality! Much love to Maxine and his family !
