Geneva "Neva" Rae Edwards Lyman, died at age 83 from ongoing complications to a serious auto accident she suffered in 2023. After a courageous journey, she passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
Neva was born on January 9, 1942, in Monticello, Utah, to Lena Christensen Edwards and Hugh "Duke" West Edwards. She loved growing up in the foothills of Blue Mountain and graduated from Monticello High School in 1960. She was her father's shadow, outdoors, and shared in many of her mother's talents, indoors.
Neva married the love of her life, James Stuart Lyman on August 11, 1961 - they were later sealed in the Mesa, Arizona Temple in March 1963. Together they raised four children, and lived a life of adventure in many places, including Utah, New Mexico, 25 years in Alaska, Chile, and Arizona before finally retiring and moving back "home" to Monticello.
From 2000 to 2002, Neva and James served a Spanish-speaking temple mission in Santiago, Chile - a time that brought her deep joy and lasting friendships. She lived her faith daily, committed to genealogy and family history, faithfully serving as a ministering sister, a loyal friend, and a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ.
Professionally, Neva worked in a variety of roles throughout her life, including Lifeguard, Swim Instructor in Utah, and Yukon River Security Guard, DMV Clerk, and Firefighter Logistics Equipment Manager in Alaska. Personally, Neva truly excelled as a homemaker. She was a talented painter, exceptional quilt maker & seamstress, and she was given the opportunity to share her culinary strengths for over 10 years as lead cook at girls camp, and youth conference. Above all, she was a devoted wife, loving mother, and a faithful servant to those around her.
She is survived by her husband, James, and daughters, Kesa MaRae Lyman Hurst and Kori Lynn Lyman Hatch. She was preceded in death by her sons, Mark Stuart Lyman and Michael Edwards Lyman.
She will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, grit, resilience, passion, work ethic, kindness, honesty, sense of humor, and selfless service. She was a source of sunshine to her friends, a stubborn, yet steadfast advocate to her children, a comfort and soft landing to her grandchildren. She loved Dr. Pepper, meat and potatoes, and the simple joy of being together, and serving those she loved.
Neva's legacy of service, love, and faith will live on in the lives of her family and all who were blessed to know her.
A funeral service in her honor will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 165 South Main Street, Monticello, Utah. All family and friends are warmly invited to attend.
