Genevieve Stelmach, age 99, of Maple Mount, KY passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Genevieve was born on February 23, 1919 in Lipnica Gorna, Poland to the late Jan and Maria (Plewa) Wnek and was educated in Poland. During World War II, Germany took Polish citizens to work on farms in Austria which was occupied by Germany. From 1940 until 1945 Genevieve worked as a farm laborer milking cows, doing household chores and caring for the children of the farm owners. While subjected to forced labor she met and married her husband Stanislaus who worked at a nearby farm. The family remained in Austria until 1950 when they immigrated to the United States, settling at Mount St. Joseph. Genevieve worked in the kitchen and bakery for the Ursuline Sisters until she retired at the age of 90. People still talk about her buns and cinnamon rolls. She was preceded in death by her husband Stanislaus in 2001 and her seven siblings. Mrs. Stelmach is survived by her sons Todd (Pat) Stelmach, John (Ginny) Stelmach, Joe (Sarah) Stelmach, and Mike (Charlotte) Stelmach; her 7 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 20 step-great-grandchildren, and 3 step-great-great-grandchildren. The Funeral Mass for Mrs. Stelmach, officiated by the Rev. Ray Goetz, will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, where prayers will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Mother House Chapel at Mount St. Joseph. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Ursuline Sisters of Mt. St. Joseph or the Building Fund of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. What an amazing woman she was, what a STORY she lived! I have many happy memories of her at the serving line "What's the matter, you no like my bread, you only take one?" She raised wonderful children, who are part of our MSJ family forever. I am sorry for your / OUR loss, and promise my prayers.
