GEOFFREY KINGSLEY BENTLEY

BENTLEY, Geoffrey Kingsley Passed away July 11th at age 85. Geoffrey was the son of Frank Bentley from Lincolnshire, England and Enid Bentley from Yorkshire, England, and he grew up in Wayland, MA. He was a lifelong learner, graduating from Wesleyan University (BA 1957), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (BS 1958) (MS 1960). He earned a diploma in experimental aerodynamics at the Von Karmen Institute Belgium in 1962 and Northeastern University (MBA 1971). In 1960, Geoffrey married Martha Wentworth Smith in Wayland. The couple lived several years in California and Europe before settling in Carlisle, MA, where they resided for 57 years. They summered in Annisquam, MA, which recently became their permanent home. Geoffrey leaves his son Nigel Bentley and his wife Betsy of Acton, MA, and his daughter Amy Picotte and her husband Brian of Underhill, VT. Grandad cherished his grandchildren, Blake and Sarah Bentley and Wilder and Lydia Picotte. Geoffrey was predeceased by his youngest son, Rory, who was 13 and by his sister, Shirley Bentley Stratton from Canaan, NH. Geoffrey's career began at Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, CA and continued at Avco/Textron in Wilmington, MA. His work included analysis of the U.S. defense budget. He served as a Congressional Fellow for the New England Congressional Caucus and as a visiting Scholar in the Lean Aerospace Initiative at MIT. Geoffrey's other activities included Chairperson of the Carlisle Democratic Committee. He also owned an organic dairy farm in Jeffersonville, VT, now conserved by the Vermont Land Trust. He enjoyed walks in the Carlisle Easterbrook Woods, hiking New England mountains, camping in National Parks, and swimming at Annisquam Lighthouse Beach. Geoffrey and Martha have fond memories of many walking tours in the British Isles and visits to Geoffrey's relatives farm in Yorkshire, England. He was a Boston sports fan and loved watching games with his son, Nigel, as well as cheering on family sporting events. As Coordinator of the Carlisle Little League, he allowed girls to play, much to the delight of his daughter, Amy. Geoffrey was a voracious reader, loved history and Celtic music, the Boston Globe and never missed the evening news. He was a kind and loving husband, father and Grandad who will be forever remembered in his words as "fair to midland." A family celebration of Geoffrey's life will be held privately on Sunday.
