Air Force Major George Maise Angle, Jr. died on March 5, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 80 years old.
George was born in
Lincolnton, North Carolina, on April 18, 1945, to George Maise Angle, Sr. and Mildred Aderholt Angle. He was predeceased by his parents; his grandmother, Adelaide S. "Ha Ha" Roberts; her husband, Claude A. Roberts; and his stepmother, Cavell Angle Raudio.
As a child, George lived all over the world, including Monterey, California; Japan; Venezuela; and Panama. Some of his fondest memories were of summers spent at The Gables in
Reedville, Virginia, with his grandparents and a host of family and friends, including his dear friend, the late Captain Fred Biddlecomb, and his beloved aunt, Clara Roberts Bray. In Reedville he was fondly known to many as "Porgie."
George attended Cristobal High School in Panama and Northumberland High School in Virginia, graduating from Cristobal in 1963. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Randolph-Macon College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and Psychology in 1967. He later received an MBA from Wake Forest University in 2000.
In 1964, George met the love of his life, Pamela Ann Spigle, on a blind date at the Camptown Races in Ashland, VA. Despite George arriving in madras shorts and Weejun loafers with no soles, Pam was smitten, and George was equally taken with her. They were married on September 6, 1966. Their early years were spent in Richmond, Virginia, where George taught at the Collegiate School. Their sons, Trey and Travis Angle, were born in 1967 and 1974.
George joined the United States Air Force in 1971. He trained at Craig Air Force Base before heading to Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. This began a distinguished aviation career that took him and his family overseas for more than a decade, including assignments in Germany and Spain and a stint with the U.S. Embassy in Madrid. Known by fellow airmen as a "pilot's pilot," he flew the U-3, U-6, UV-18, EC-135, C-130, and C-12, and served as an Instructor Pilot, Chief Special Operations Pilot, Chief of Operations and Training, and Chief of Standardization/Evaluation. His service included worldwide C-130 missions across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, duty as a Forward Air Controller in OV-10A aircraft in Thailand during the Vietnam conflict, and support of operations during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and other honors for his service.
After returning to the United States, George and his family settled in North Carolina, first in Fayetteville and later in Winston-Salem. He later retired as Chief Financial Officer of Centurion Aviation. George was a lifetime member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and served the Tarheel Central Chapter of MOAA for 26 years, including 17 years as Secretary and two years as President.
George was exceptionally kind, a gentle giant who stood 6'4" and towered over most people he met. He will be remembered as a lover of wine and bourbon, college basketball, and eating hard crabs. An avid reader and accomplished home chef, George delighted in cooking for family and friends, often sharing his homemade meals, jams, and Christmas cookies over the years. He was rarely without a camera around his neck, always eager to capture life's moments, though he much preferred being behind the camera than in front of it.
George was a real-life hero to his sons, Trey and Travis, and he treasured every opportunity to spend time with them and their families. Above all, he was devoted to Pamela Ann, though he liked to joke that they were on their seventh divorce.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Spigle Angle of Winston Salem, NC; two sons, George Maise "Trey" Angle III and his wife, Ann Sheridan Angle, of Fort Mill, SC; and William Travis Angle and his wife, Beth Crowther Angle, of Durham, NC. He is also survived by his beloved "favorite" granddaughter, Kathleen Allison "Katie" Angle of Tiverton, RI, and four strapping young grandsons, Henry Maise and Carter Michael Angle of Durham, NC, and Brooks Aubrey and Leo William Angle of Fort Mill, SC; along with many extended family members and dear friends who loved him deeply and will miss him greatly.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow at Roseland Cemetery in Reedville.
