George M Baker, 88, of Round Rock, TX passed away peacefully in the hospital on October 6, 2025. The youngest of six children, George was born on a farm in Haskell, Texas on July 10, 1937, to Charles V. Baker and Verne Baker. The doctor's fee was six little pigs. When he was 7, the family moved to Wolfforth, near Lubbock, TX. In 1947 his dad took a job as a carpenter and the family moved to Lubbock, TX. While in junior high, he learned to tool leather and make belts and billfolds for spending money. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force that fall. He worked in S.A.C. (Strategic Air Command) as a ground radar technician scoring bombers on their practice runs. He was stationed in San Antonio, Texas, Biloxi, Mississippi and Winslow, Arizona. While in Winslow, Arizona, money was very tight and George would pool his money with one of his friends who was married, and his friend's wife would make soup for them to eat until their next pay day.
In June 1963, George began work for Xerox Corporation as a technical representative in Houston. He worked for Xerox for 32 years, then retired. He met the love of his life, Nancy, in 1963 on a blind date. They married in October 1964. Their first daughter Debra was born October 1966. Their second daughter Patricia was born December 1968.
They lived in Houston until 1973 when he transferred with Xerox to Austin, Texas. Then they moved to Round Rock in 1975. He and Nancy spent a lot of time working outside building fences, gardening, and caring for their animals – dogs, cats, horses and emus over the years. George enjoyed woodworking and working with leather when he was not building fences and barns.
George and Nancy enjoyed traveling together over the years. They went everywhere from Alaska to Morocco with friends and family. They shared their love of travel with their granddaughter, Tia, spending many of her summer vacations driving across the country - from the Grand Canyon all the way to Canada and stopping at every zoo along the way.
He kept in touch with his friends from the military and throughout the years they would all reconnect. Then in later years, some of the couples wintered in South Texas and they would all meet down there each year.
George is survived by daughters Debra Baker Jeffrey, Patricia Oshel and husband Douglas, granddaughter Tia Oshel and husband Nolan Patterson; sister Helen Perrin and husband Craig, and numerous nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents Charles V. Baker, Verne Baker; sisters Miriam Baker, JoAnn Baker Sturgeon Sepp; brothers Charles A. Baker and Hershel L. Baker.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 21, from 9:00-10:00am with a funeral service following at 10:00am in the chapel of Beck Funeral Home, 15709 Ranch Rd. 620. Interment with military honors will follow at 2:00pm at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
