George Beck Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Money and King Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Mar. 3, 2026.
George Melvin Beck, 76, of Vienna, Virginia, passed away on the morning of February 23, 2026, as a result of complications from lung disease.

George was born on January 1, 1950, a 'New Year's Baby' to Bruce M. Beck and Mary S. Beck in Alexandria, Virginia. He graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia in 1967, where he met the love of his life, JoAnne Mary Konkel, shortly before graduating. While he went on to study at North Carolina Weslyan College, he and JoAnne tied the knot on June 20, 1970.

George began his first position with the National Motor Freight Traffic Association in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1972, kicking off his 51 years of dedicated service in the Transportation Industry. As a Transportation Specialist, George was fortunate enough to travel all over the country to speak with the nation's trucking companies, a duty which he thoroughly enjoyed.
George and JoAnne had their first child, Christopher Michael Beck on June 9, 1971 and then their second child, Robin Teresa Smith [nee Beck] on January 10, 1981. Thereafter, they settled in Centreville, Virginia, where over the years, George was an active member of the community, participating in his kids' sports and band activities, including Class of '99 Centreville High School Senior Night! George also volunteered with his wife and kids at a local homeless shelter on Thanksgiving, helped build a playground at a local disabled children's center and enjoyed taking in the region's ample history, taking his family to area historic sites in VA, DC and MD.

After their oldest child graduated from Centreville High School in 1999, George and JoAnne moved to Vienna, VA, where he loved spending his time with her in their backyard, particularly working together their rose garden, where he once rearranged the garden stones to look like 'Stone Henge' after their third trip to the UK! George also spent years dedicated to volunteering with his wife doing state and federal political work and fighting for animal advocacy, where he loved his time volunteering with JoAnne at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, and with BREW (Beagle, Rescue, Education & Welfare) and Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, even adopting several beagles that were rescued from area testing centers that he and JoAnne helped to get shut down.

George remained active until he became ill just after Thanksgiving 2022, when he contracted pneumonia and spent more than three months in the hospital and rehabilitation center, where he was diagnosed with lung disease. When George came home to Vienna, VA in late February of 2023, his health continued to deteriorate and he passed away at home, with his wife, how he wanted to leave this physical world on February 23, 2026, and his family takes some comfort in that.
George and JoAnne were together for 58 years and were married for almost 56 years, which would have happened on June 20, 2026. His loss is immense and indescribable to his spouse of 55+ years and JoAnne thanks the community for their outpouring of love and support during this extremely difficult time.

George was predeceased by a younger brother Michael, and his parents Bruce and Mary Beck. He is survived by his spouse, JoAnne Beck, his son Chris Beck, his wife Stacey and their son Rylan [11yr], and his daughter Robin and her husband William Clay Smith.

In lieu of any floral arrangements, the family ask that a donation be made in George's name, to the Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, https://www.homewardtrails.org/, or BREW [Beagle, Rescue, Education & Welfare) https://brewbeagles.org/
