George Benitez Jr. was born on May 18, 1964, in
Salt Lake City, Utah, to Mary Gilpin and George Benitez Sr. From the very beginning, George carried a spirit that would leave a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
In his younger years, George spent his time chasing after the love of his life, Delilah Delgado. What began as young love grew into a lifelong bond-though never married, he devoted over 30 years of his life to her with unwavering loyalty and love. Together, they built a family and were blessed with two children, Shalamar and Tyson. His legacy continued to grow through his four beautiful granddaughters: Izabella (16), AlvyaJoi (8), AnnaVee (7), and baby Mulanie (6 months), each of whom brought immeasurable light into his life.
George passed away on March 25, 2026, leaving behind an indelible mark on the world and on the hearts of those who loved him. He was a man of passion and pride-deeply devoted to his Puerto Rican heritage and a lifelong fan of football, especially his beloved Chicago Bears. He took great pride in earning his GED and went on to pursue meaningful work, including his time at General Hospital in Utah. He later graduated from Lone Peak Firefighter School and also found joy and creativity as a talented grill sous chef. Whether cooking, camping with family, or riding his bike from town to town, George lived life with a sense of adventure and a gift for making others feel welcome.
In August 2017, George suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on his left side. Though his life changed in profound ways, his spirit remained resilient. Even in the face of hardship, he continued to find purpose through love-especially through his grandchildren. His granddaughter AlvyaJoi became a bright light in his days, visiting often, caring for him, and filling his world with laughter and stories. He cherished every moment with her-teaching her piano, sharing stories, and nurturing the deep love for music and dance they both carried in their souls.
Before his stroke, George shared a special bond with his first granddaughter, Izabella, who brought him endless joy. He adored playing with her and listening to her talk, treasuring the closeness they shared. She held a uniquely special place in his heart. His granddaughters were his greatest source of strength and the reason he kept going-they were truly his life.
George is lovingly survived by his daughter, Shalamar Delgado, and his son, Tyson Delgado (Falynn). He also leaves behind his four beautiful granddaughters-Izabella, AlvyaJoi, AnnaVee, and Mulanie-who were the light of his life.
He is also survived by the love of his life, Delilah Delgado; his mother, Mary Gilpin; and his sisters, Georgia Kinder (LaMonte), Naomi Claudio (Orlando), Patricia Benitez, Georgette Benitez, and Natalie Benitez, along with many cherished nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Alexzandra Benitez; his brother, Felix Benitez; and his father, George Benitez Sr.
In honoring George's wishes, he will be cremated and returned home to be with his daughter, Shalamar, and his granddaughter, AlvyaJoi. At his request, there will be no formal services. His family finds comfort in knowing they are honoring his wishes and will carry his memory with them always.
Shalamar and AlvyaJoi would like to express their deepest gratitude to the care team at Monument Health South Salt Lake for the compassion and dedication shown to George over the last four years of his life. During his time there, George formed meaningful friendships, and his caregivers became like family to him.
He truly loved each and every one of you, and we are eternally grateful for the kindness, patience, and love you gave him. There are no words that can fully express our appreciation for the nurses, CNAs, and staff who cared so deeply for our dad. Thank you for making him feel seen, valued, and truly loved.
Closing Tribute:
Dad,
I don't know how to say goodbye, so I won't. I'll just carry you with me-every day, in everything I do. You were my home, my strength, and one of the greatest parts of my life.
I see you in your granddaughters, especially in AlvyaJoi-the way she loves, the way she shows up, the way she carries your light. I promise to keep that love alive for her, and for all of us.
Thank you for loving me the way you did. Thank you for staying strong for so long. You can rest now.
We've got you-always.
We'll love you forever.
