Dr. George Wesley Bonewell

Bonewell, George MD, PhD passed away June 24th, 2023 surrounded by family. Loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Born in Harvey, North Dakota in 1937. He grew up loving a long series of black Labrador retrievers. Each met an early demise from a rural upbringing, but all were known as "Danny". He graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1955, attended the University of Minnesota and received his BA in Psychology, Minor in Chemistry and Statistics in 1958. He married the love of his life, Mary Elaine Bonewell, in 1961. Became a Doctor of Medicine in 1966 and received his PhD in Neurophysiology, Minor in Biochemistry in 1969. By this time, George was the proud father of four sons. George started the Minneapolis Age and Opportunity clinic in 1969 and was an internal medicine physician at Abbott Northwestern for 38 years. In George's words, he felt honored to work with the wonderful patients, staff and physicians at Abbott Northwestern and the Minneapolis Age and Opportunity Clinic. His time as a physician gave him many fond memories. George retired in 2004 to help his wife, spend time with his sons and grandchildren.
If George wasn't at the hospital or home in his earlier years, he was playing golf at the Minnesota Valley Country Club or handicapping horses at Canterbury Park. His love of horse racing led him to breed, raise and race a horse named "Sunshine Forever". The horse never raced well, but like all of the people and animals in George's life, it was well loved. During George's later years, he selflessly watched over his wife Elaine as her muscular dystrophy progressed.
George will be remembered for his fierce love of family, generosity and sense of humor.
He is preceded in death by parents George Renos and Leava (Sletten) Bonewell, wife Mary Elaine (Snyder) Bonewell, brother Daryl (Betty) Bonewell, and brother Robert (Sharon) Bonewell. He is survived by four sons, Wesley (Ann), Bradley (Magdalena), Dwight (Zoraida), Brian (Michelle); grandchildren, Tyler (Becky), Joshua (Erin), Nicholas (Amy), Zachary and Grant; great-grandchild Zoey Elaine Bonewell; brother Courtland (Donna) Bonewell and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial gathering at Washburn - McReavy Funeral Home in Bloomington, MN on July 14th from 4-7pm. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery, South St. Paul, MN.
