George Burkel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Helgeson Funeral Home - Roseau on Jan. 19, 2026.
A Funeral Service for George Burkel of Greenbush, MN will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

George Brian Burkel was born on February 8th, 1960, to Robert Burkel Sr. and Patricia (Tkachyk). He was raised in Greenbush, MN, on a turkey farm along with his brothers Robert Jr., Donnie, Joey, and sisters Debbie and Barb. He met his companion of 46 years while working at Marvin Windows. They were married on July 28th, 1979. Through the years, George worked at the pellet plant outside of Badger and at Polaris before he finished his welding career at Central Boiler. When George wasn't at work, he was working at home and caring for his cattle. Throughout his life, he enjoyed restoring cars, trapping, hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, farming, and, of course, all his shenanigans. He learned through experience and had a lot of creative solutions to fixing problems.

Dear Dad, Words cannot express the depth of sorrow and emptiness we have felt since you left us a few days ago. You were not just a father, but you were a husband, brother, uncle, grandpa, and friend. You had your unique way of showing us tough love; in the end, you raised a beautiful family, the only way you knew how. You taught us the value of hard work, perseverance, and the importance of family. Despite your own battle with cancer, you selflessly cared for your family to ensure we were supported when this time came.

While we mourn your loss, we also celebrate the incredible life you lived. We remember the countless memories we shared and the laughter we enjoyed. Your spirit will forever be part of us, guiding us through life's challenges and reminding us to cherish every moment. We find comfort in knowing that you are now at peace, watching over us from above.

George is survived by his wife, Donna Burkel; his children, Skylar (Alyssa) Burkel, Melony (Brent) Heddan, and Sonny Burkel; his grandchildren, Desirae, Alexis, Siarah, Cody, and Phoenix; and his great-grandchildren, Wrenley, Emerson, Zephora, and Zechariah. He is also survived by his siblings, Robert Burkel (Debbie Moen), Donnie (Barb) Burkel, Joe Burkel, Barb (Bill) Blawat, and Debbie Erickson.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Patricia Burkel; his grandparent, George Burkel Sr.; and his great-grandchild, Nathaniah Sourdif.
