George Lewis Clauer beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many, passed away surrounded by family on November 19, 2023. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. George L Clauer Jr. and his mother, Alice J Ogg Clauer.
He was born in
Springfield, Ohio and raised in southern Louisiana. He graduated from Louisiana State University where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. In 1971, George enlisted in the US Army serving until his honorable discharge in 1979, attaining the rank of Captain. George met the love of his life, Laurel while they were both attending LSU Law School. They shared 50 wonderful years of marriage and were blessed with one daughter, Elizabeth.
George was dedicated to the practice of law. As an author, speaker, and instructor in oil, gas, mineral, and bankruptcy litigation, his impact extended beyond the courtroom. George represented the Louisiana State Mineral Board and was a member of the US Committee for Revision of Bankruptcy Laws. As a Trustee for the US Bankruptcy Court and Vice Chairman of the East Baton Rouge Parish Commission of Governmental Ethics, George exemplified commitment to justice and ethics. His contributions were further acknowledged with the Excellence in Legal Journalism Award from the Louisiana State Bar Association. Beyond the professional sphere, George was deeply engaged in his community, providing hundreds of hours of pro bono legal services in Louisiana and South Carolina.
After 35 years of practicing law, George traded in his signature bow ties for golf clubs and a boat. He enjoyed 15 years of retirement in South Carolina, followed by five years in Texas. George continued to serve, joining the boards of Compass of Carolina,
Habitat for Humanity, and the Oconee County 9/11 Memorial. As a member of the Cortana Kiwanis Club, he delighted in cooking jambalaya and playing the role of "Santa" at the annual Christmas Parade. His diverse interests included bocce ball, billiards, fly fishing, hiking, mahjong, photography and travel. Most importantly, George relished spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed creating treasured memories such as his annual reading of "The Cajun Night before Christmas", with perfect Cajun dialect.
George's generous spirit and unwavering optimism defined him. A natural storyteller and jokester, his toasts lit up every room he entered. He was a talented cook, often entertaining guests with a flaming Café Brûlot. George's passions extended to his love for fine bourbon and his unwavering support for the LSU Tigers. He lived by the mantra, "Do something every day to make someone else happy," and this philosophy illuminated every aspect of his life. George's legacy lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him, a testament to a life well-lived.
He is survived by his wife, Laurel; daughter, Elizabeth Cochran (Seth); and five cherished grandchildren, Ryan, Ethan, Natalie, Grace and Chloe. He is also survived by his sister, Lynne McIntyre (Don), as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Karme, Erika, and Jose for their compassionate care during his final weeks.
A memorial will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the
