Dr. George Samuel Cowan Jr.

George Samuel Cowan Jr (aka Sam) was born in 1954 to Margaret Cavender Cowan and George Cowan Sr, in Fort Worth, Texas. He attended the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated in 1982, after which he went on to complete a residency at the LSU Medical School. He then went on to a successful career at the Children's Hospital in New Orleans for another fifteen years. Retirement bored him, and he returned to treating children in Bogalusa, LA until the end of his life.

He is survived by three sisters (Lisa Cowan Madison, Carrie Cowan Reeder, and Randy Cowan Fullager), and one daughter (Emily Cowan Handy). Sam was blessed with laidback personality and folksy drawl that always endeared him to patients and coworkers, and was never too busy to give a wave to passing motorists in a small town. His more passionate emotions were reserved for hollering at news anchors, and engaging in animated conversations about the magnitude of the national debt. He had a great love for American history, specializing in the Civil War era, and collected a number of books and movies on the subject. He will be greatly missed by his family and the Bogalusa community.
