George F. DeCambra Jr, age 88 passed away on October 13, 2023, in Naples Florida. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held sometime in 2024 at Summer Street Church in
Nantucket, Massachusetts.
George was born in
Brooklyn, New York to George and Victoria DeCambra on February 27, 1935. He graduated Leonia High School in Leonia New Jersey and went on at attend Rutgers Agricultural School, and subsequently served as a machinist in the US Navy. George and his business partner established Northern Valley Motors in Closter New Jersey. Together they built it into a successful automotive business; which he retired from at age 50. Living in
Cresskill, New Jersey George was an ASE Certified mechanic, volunteer fireman, and EMT. He developed a passion for aviation and owned a number of airplanes over some 35 years. Like most everything he did, he pursued it fully ultimately becoming a flight instructor.
After moving to Nantucket, he became a general contractor where he built and remodeled houses for many years. George was an Elder at Summer Street Church in Nantucket, on the board of directors for Missionary Flights International in Ft. Pierce Florida, and a member of the Gideons International.
George possessed an amazing intellect, enormous energy, coupled with a very strong can-do attitude. He was the patriarch of the family and source of strength and wisdom for his children and grandchildren; each of which all had their own special relationship with him. Most remarkable, was George's personal relationship with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He came to know Jesus around 1970, and was never the same. He reflected the Love of Jesus strongly for the rest of his life to all who knew him. He not only talked about his faith, he expressed his love for God and others by giving sacrificially of himself. George's favorite Bible verse was Romans 12:1: " I appeal to you therefore brothers, by the mercies of God to present your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship". He truly lived it.
George is preceded in death by his wife Karen (Stark), who were high school sweethearts who had a lifetime of love together. He is survived by his children: Kerry Raven, Karen Gilbert, (husband Del), Daniel DeCambra, (wife Joan), and eight grandchildren. While we miss him terribly, we know for all who have put their faith in Jesus that there is a great reunion awaiting- "(We) do not grieve as others do who have no hope". 1 Thess. 4:14
