James Flannery Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 27, 2026.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Flannery, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He passed away recently in Naples, Florida, surrounded by his loved ones.

Jim was born in Pierre, South Dakota, to Grace and Walter Flannery, the oldest son of eleven children. At the age of 13, he met the love of his life, Linda Johnson, and they were married in 1967. Together, they raised four children and built a beautiful life near Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Jim graduated from Northern State College and began his career as a high school teacher before being drafted into the United States Army, where he served for three years during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he moved to Minneapolis and began a successful career in financial services, eventually starting his own agency. A true serial entrepreneur, Jim later ventured into real estate development, as well as property ownership and management.

Jim had a remarkable gift for developing others. He was a mentor who instinctively saw the strengths in people and drew them out through encouragement, affirmation, and belief. His success was generously shared, particularly with those most in need. He was known for his optimistic outlook, family first perspective, and Irish sense of humor. His greatest joy in life was time spent with his family.

Jim was deeply devoted to his Catholic faith, with a special devotion to Our Lady of Medjugorje.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda, and his 4 children: Jami Romshek (Matt), Ryan Flannery (Lorena), Kent Flannery (Jennifer), and Taylor Flannery (Nicole); his grandchildren, Paige Petts (Andrew), Reilly Wiley (Justin), Jack and Joseph Flannery, Maddi Lee (Wakon), Hunter Flannery (Julia), Grace, Ava, Lauren and Evelyn Flannery, Cullen, Jameson and Quinn Flannery and his great-grandchildren; James and Rosemary Petts, Kenzo Wiley, Avyn Lee, Joshua and Henry Flannery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grace and Walter Flannery; his sister, Norma Schuh; and his son in law, Mark Pogue.

A private funeral Mass and burial service will be held at San Marco Catholic Church in Marco Island, Florida. A Celebration of Life will be planned in Minnesota at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Avow Hospice House in Naples, FL: (https://avowcares.org/ways-to-give/).
