George Wilbur Dismukes Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on November 16, 1932, in Columbus, Georgia, George lived a life rich with diverse experiences and heartfelt connections. A funeral service to honor George's life will be held on Sunday August 10, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Vance Brooks Funeral Home 4048 Macon Road Columbus, Georgia, 31907. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Paws Humane Society of Columbus in George’s honor.
George's journey took him through many paths, each embodying his relentless spirit and unwavering determination. After joining the Army at the age of 22, he served honorably as a First Lieutenant, a role that showcased his leadership and commitment to service. He later pursued his academic dream, earning a J.D. law degree from the University of Georgia. However, in a true testament to his adventurous nature, George chose not to follow the traditional route of a legal career. Instead, he forged a new path, working in insurance as an adjuster. Later, he ventured into entrepreneurship with a fencing company and later a real estate business, owning and operating multiple rental properties. Lastly, George took on a new role at Pratt Whitney until his well-earned retirement.
A devout member of Second Baptist Church in Columbus for many years, George found strength and community within his faith. He was also an active member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and a longtime member of the Sons of the American Revolution, highlighting his passion for history and camaraderie.
In his free time, George found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, went on daily walks, and enjoyed his favorite snack of raw onions. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness, which will continue to resonate in the hearts of his family and friends.
George is survived by his daughter, Anne Dismukes Phillips, and her husband, Mike; his son, George Dismukes III; and his cherished grandchildren, Michael Phillips and his wife Jessica, Melanie Staten and her husband Blake, and Patrick Phillips and his wife Reena. His family was further blessed with the arrival of five great-grandchildren: Chandler Anne Staton, Charlie Staton, Skyler Phillips, Ellison Phillips, and Cora Phillips.
He is reunited in eternity with his loving wife of 61 years, Betty Dismukes, and his parents, George Dismukes Sr. and Thelma Howell Dismukes
As we gather to celebrate his remarkable life, we remember a man who embraced every opportunity with gratitude and love. His spirit will endure in the hearts of his family, cherished friends, and everyone whose life he touched.
