George Doty Obituary

Published by Chandler Funeral Homes & Crematory - Wilmington on Feb. 16, 2017.
George E. Doty III George E. Doty III of Sarasota, FL died on February 16, 2017 at the age of 81. He joins in Heaven his beloved wife, Cynthia H. Doty, who passed from this life in 2000. Mr. Doty was born in Barrington, IL in 1935 and graduated from New Trier High School in nearby Winnetka, IL. He completed his undergraduate degree at Yale University in 1957 and later earned a Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Chicago. He was a tireless advocate for others, both professionally and personally. Mr. Doty enjoyed a long career in the financial industry in New York, Connecticut, Wisconsin and Delaware. Outside his professional life, he gave generously of his time, most notably as a dedicated member of the Board of Directors of Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee during the 1980's. Mr. Doty was an avid and accomplished golfer who qualified for and played in the U.S. Amateur golf tournament in the late 1950's. Genealogy was an area of special interest for Mr. Doty and he happily spent many hours researching the Doty/Dunham family histories. In retirement, he enjoyed the warm weather and sunny beaches of Sarasota, FL. He delighted in listening to others and was genuinely interested in discovering the uniqueness of each individual who graced his path. Mr. Doty is survived by his three children, Brit C. Doty of Madison, WI, Barbara D. Gurican (Scott Lamers) of Whitefish Bay, WI, and George E. Doty IV of Los Angeles, CA, as well as his adoring grandchildren, Jacob, Claire, Madelyn and Jack. He is also survived by two sisters, George-Ann Ryland of Oneonta, NY and Mary Doty of Rock Hill, SC. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly and spent much of his retirement traveling the country so he could be engaged in their lives. A private service will be held in Wilmington, DE on Saturday, February 25, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at John's Hopkins Hospital or Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

George was loved by his Amtrak family. I commuted with George for many years from Wilmington to NYC. We were train buddies. He was a wonderful, compassionate man who dearly loved his family and will be missed by many.

Dear family,

Seeing George's obituary in our local paper made we think back on my wonderful memories of your family. I was one of the office mates of your mom at Winterthur and we often heard stories of your family happenings. I lost track of your dad when he went to Florida, but many of us at Winterthur certainly will be thinking of your family as you go forward with great memories....

May the God of all comfort strengthen the family during this time of deep sorrow. Those who pass on, God keeps in his memory because they are precious in his eyes. My sincerest condolences. (Psalms 116:15)

I am a co-worker of Brit's. I was very touched by Mr. Doty's words he sent to the staff at Brit's school in Waunakee. His words made me wish I had had the opportunity to meet him. He sounds like a remarkable man. My condolences go out to Brit and her entire family.
