George Gebhardt Obituary

George Gebhardt, age 80, passed away Tuesday, September 6th, 2022, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Joan Marie Gebhardt and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, George John Gebhardt and Hildegarde Aue Gebhardt, his brothers Martin (Joanne) and Julius, and his sister, Margaret.

George grew up in Long Island. He was granted a four year academic scholarship at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio where he majored in Economics and minored in Mathematics. He was on the Dean's list, was awarded the AFROTC Academic Medal and The Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award, and was named Undergraduate Fellow in Economics.

In 1965, he graduated from The Amos Tuck Graduate School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College, with emphasis in Marketing and Finance. He completed additional college courses in Physics at Northwestern University.

For eight years George worked in progressively responsible jobs in Baltimore, Washington D.C., and New York City. In 1970, he began purchasing and rebuilding old Baltimore rowhouses. He taught management classes at several colleges and universities.

George believed in hard work and in taking responsibility for one's own future. He was proud of the work he did, building, repairing, creating beautiful homes both in Florida and Maryland. When he was younger he loved sailing his Hobie Cat out on the water in a strong wind. He loved baseball and played well when he was in college and graduate school.

Even though Joan had traveled extensively in her younger years, George had not. Together they visited Newfoundland, Labrador, Beijing, Shanghai, Belgium, Normandy, Switzerland, Germany, and other countries and republics, making return trips to many.

He will be missed every day, every minute, by his wife, Joan. He is a bright and shining star in the sky at night, a ray of sunshine in the day, an ever present spirit of joy and hope to those who knew him, loved him, and cherish his memory.

A memorial service will be held in the near future.

I am deeply saddened to learn of George´s passing. He,like his mother, had a very positive influence on me. I regret that so much time has passed since we´ve spoken. Joan - you are in my thoughts.
