Obituary published on Legacy.com by George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home - Needham on Nov. 19, 2025.
George F. Haskell passed away peacefully in Needham on Monday, November 17 at the age of 91.
George, the eldest of four children, was born in Jamaica Plain, MA, on March 26, 1934, to George C. and Julia (Ryan) Haskell.
After graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain, George went to Boston University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Business. Soon after in 1960, he founded the George Haskell Insurance Agency which he ran for 55 years with dedication and a lot of hard work.
George met the love of his life, Elly, in the summer of '62 at the Hunt Club in Falmouth, MA. They married in 1964, and went on to build their lives in
Needham, MA, where they raised their four children. He was a steadfast family man and enthusiastic supporter of his children, hardly missing a baseball, soccer or hockey game or dance recital.
George loved living in Needham and was a cornerstone of the Needham community. He was an active member of The Needham Exchange Club for over 50 years where he served in leadership roles at the local, regional and national levels. Notably he helped the National Exchange Club establish multiple child abuse prevention centers across the country. As a proud American, he most enjoyed helping to organize the Exchange Club's 4th of July parade and celebrations in Needham.
George is survived by his son Patrick J. and his wife Margaret Rimmler, of Scituate, MA; Tara Kilgarriff and her husband, Tom, of Westwood, MA; George "Chris" and his companion, Karen Adams, of Ramsey, NJ; and Susan Greene and her husband Felimy of England; as well as eleven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 59 years, Eleanor, and his siblings Don Haskell, Carol Scanlan and MaryAnn Zern.
George loved a good veal parm, a well-done Rob Roy and watching Boston teams play, but the most important thing in life was family.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, November 23 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m at George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 1305 Highland Ave. Needham. The Funeral will be Monday, November 24, with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 1302 Highland Ave., Needham. Interment will follow at Mount Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury, MA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Needham Exchange Club (https://needhamexchangeclub.org/Donate) in his memory.
