A video recording of the service will also be posted on this site should any issues arise with the Facebook livestream.
He was born in Cherkasy, Ukraine and emigrated to the United States in 2006. George graduated from Mattawan High School in 2008, and Western Michigan University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Following graduation, he moved to Holland and worked for Rutherford and Associates for over 11 years. He was a great software engineer and well respected at his company.
He and his friend Zack recently started their dream as partners of a software development company called SharkeyByte. They promised each other since college that they eventually would quit their 9-5 jobs and do something together.
Personally, he liked camping and running with his friends, playing disc golf. He used to do karate when he was a teenager back in Ukraine getting awarded a brown belt. George was a huge fan of Star Wars, especially Baby Yoda, liked gaming a lot and watching action and sci-fi movies. He fell in love with biking and recently bought a motorcycle that he rode everywhere. He loved to get philosophical although very much had his own way of thinking.
George was extremely helpful, generous, and kind to all his friends and family. He was supporting his mom and cousin in Ukraine financially since he was a college student after moving to the United States. He liked kids and could easily connect with them, being very attentive and loving to his nieces Alisa and Elizabeth. George was also a father to his two cats Alex and Eliza that he rescued from a shelter. The cats meant the world to him.
He is survived by his father, Alex Portyanko of Florida; mother, Oksana Kravchenko of Ukraine, siblings Kateryna, Oksana, Pylyp, and cousins Iryna and Veronika.
A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St. Holland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made via link below to cover memorial expenses and support his family in Ukraine. http://tiny.cc/d99czz
