George Lenaeus Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Almon Funeral Home and Chapel - Carrollton on Feb. 24, 2026.
George Erland Lenaeus, age 82, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away Monday, February 23, 2026.

Born September 19, 1943, in Florence, Alabama, George was the son of the late George Albert Nicholas Lenaeus and Leora Baird Lenaeus. A 1961 graduate of Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, Virginia, George's life was marked early by joy and laughter. His sister fondly shared that he was "a clown from birth" and that they "never had the same babysitter twice."

In 1961, at a high school sorority party at Baldwin Cabin, George met the love of his life, Susan Markley. Their love story began that evening and continued faithfully for more than six decades after they married in 1963 - a partnership filled with devotion, laughter, and unwavering support.

George graduated from Georgia Tech in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. A proud member of the Kappa Alpha Order at Georgia Tech, he later served as a sponsor for the KA chapter at the University of West Georgia. Shortly after graduation, he and Susan moved to Carrollton, where he began his career with Southwire in Research and Development. He worked for Southwire from 1965 to 1979 and was the firm's representative for a number of overseas ventures. After Southwire he was an organizer of Merrill and Associates along with Ellis Merrill and Jim Collins and was the firm's CEO before retiring.

Deeply committed to his profession and community, George served on the State Board of Engineering and was active in numerous civic organizations. He was a past president and board member of the Carroll County Community Theater, past president of Sunset Hills Country Club, and a past president of Rotary, where he also enjoyed fellowship at the "Curmudgeons Table." An Eagle Scout and founder of Scout Troop 17, George invested faithfully in young people. As a Rotary Exchange host parent, he and Susan opened their home and hearts to students from around the world, maintaining those cherished relationships throughout his life.

George loved sailing and took a sabbatical in 1973 to manufacture small sailboats. He and Susan sailed multiple boats over the years. George was an avid Georgia Tech football fan, a devoted golfer who enjoyed bi-weekly matches with friends, and proudly shot an 80 on his 80th birthday. He and Susan enjoyed travel with trips to many countries around the world. His joyful spirit, infectious laugh, and jolly nature made every gathering brighter.

George was a faithful and dedicated servant of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church. Over the years, he served in numerous leadership roles and faithfully led "Theology on Tap." His faith was active, thoughtful, and lived out in service to others.

Above all, George was a dedicated father to his family, and a loyal friend. He was always willing to help with a project, loved his grandchildren, and was excited to meet his first great-grandson at Christmas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by a dear friend who was like a brother, Yogi Roberts.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Susan Lenaeus; children, Sam Lenaeus, Julie (Will) Mizell, and Eric (Laura) Lenaeus; sister, Molly Lenaeus Mills; half-brother, Nicholas Lenaeus; grandchildren, Bill (Savannah) Mizell, Elizabeth (Alex) Alexandrou, Jack Lenaeus, and Luke Lenaeus; great-grandson, Nicholas Alexandrou; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday, February 27, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church with The Very Reverend Jeff Jackson officiating. Overflow seating with livestream of service will be available in the chapel of Almon Funeral Home. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 606 Newnan Street, Carrollton, GA 30117.
