Milo – George A. Mayo, 96, passed away peacefully February 22, 2026, at his home. He was born July 7, 1929, in Milo, the son of Edward and Ruth (Cook) Mayo.

George lived his entire life in Milo, attended the University of Maine Orono and was a veteran of the Korean War earning recognition as a sharpshooter. He spent his career working for the Property tax division of the State of Maine, retiring as the Director of the Property Tax Division. Following retirement, he operated an assessing business for many years serving as the assessor for the Town of Glenburn among others. He also served as a member of the Milo School Board for several years.

George loved the outdoors spending many hours hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and boating. George and Delores summered on Schoodic lake for over 60 years and split time for 30 years wintering in Redington Beach, Florida. His greatest joy came from spending time with friends and family. His quick wit and endless patience were loved by all.

George is survived by his three sons, George "Andrew" Mayo and his wife, Lori, of Windham, Michael Mayo and his wife, Linda, of Scarborough, and William Mayo of Lakeview Plantation; six grandchildren, Drew and his wife, Amanda, Brent and his wife, Alyssa, Matt and his wife, Gabriella, Aimee, and her husband, Alex, Mike and his wife, Lindsey, and Will and his wife, Laura; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; his loving wife of 63 years, Delores (MacDonald) Mayo; sister, Joan Witherly; and two infant siblings.

George was helped in his last years by a care team led by Kim Hamlin. His life was extended and made enjoyable by Kim and the team who worked tirelessly on his care.

A graveside memorial service will be held in the spring in the family lot in the Evergreen Cemetery, Milo. Messages of condolence and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.

Just learned of George´s passing. I worked for him in the Property Tax Division. He was a great boss who always cared for his crew.

My regards to his family, I´m sure he will be missed.

Bob Doiron, Wayne Maine, but wintering in Florida.
