On January 27, 2024, Dr. George Henry Miller, 95, passed away peacefully after a long journey with dementia at Stella Maris Hospice in Towson, MD.
George was born and raised in the Mayfield/Belair Edison neighborhood in Baltimore, two blocks away from his childhood church and school: The Shrine of the Little Flower. Growing up during the Great Depression, young George started work at an early age to help support his family. Working after school and Saturdays at a corner grocery in the neighborhood, he began a life-long love of coffee by chewing on roasted coffee beans. He later got a summer job working at Clifton Park, as part of the grounds crew maintaining the golf course. Thus began another life-long love affair with the game of golf.
He was a proud scholarship student at Mount St. Joseph High School, graduating in 1946 and pursuing Pre-Med studies at the University of Maryland. Finishing college in only three years, he attended the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore, graduating in 1953. Before final year of medical school, in June of 1952, George married to the love of his life – JoAnne Restivo, whom he had known since childhood, and who grew up just three blocks away.
After completing his internship and residency at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, young Dr. Miller served in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 through 1959 at the Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois, where he was Chief of Obstetrics for the base hospital.
Returning to Baltimore, George entered private practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology. In the early years he had privileges at many Baltimore hospitals but eventually concentrated his time between Mercy and St. Joseph Hospitals.
His specialty often brought about 7-day work weeks since one could never tell when a patient was going to go into labor. This work however brought him the great joy of bringing literally thousands of new lives into the world.
After a long and successful career, Dr. Miller retired from full-time practice at the age of 65. Nevertheless, Dr. Miller continued to offer his services at Stella Maris, free Health Clinics in Baltimore County, and finally in 1994 as part of the medical team for Mission of Mercy, for whom he became an advocate and benefactor.
A life-long devoted Catholic, George never missed Sunday Mass, and eventually became a Pastoral Minister, who devoted several hours a week to bringing Communion to patients in many of the hospitals where he had been on the medical staff. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and The Holy Name Society.
During his long retirement, George and JoAnne enjoyed family life to the fullest. They shared many trips to Maine in the summer, and North Myrtle Beach where in 1983 he purchased a retirement home precisely because there were well over 60 golf courses in the area. He was a long-time member of Hillendale Country Club, where he played at least one of his three Hole-in-One shots.
George was the beloved husband of JoAnne M. Miller (nee Restivo); devoted father of George P. Miller and his husband Joseph Somma, Mary Danetta Blanchard and her husband Peter, Frank Miller and his partner Gina Szymanski, and Robert Miller and his wife Bernadine; loving grandfather of Christopher Miller, Samantha Rogers and her husband Norman, Tyler Miller and his wife Kaylee, and Hannah Miller; cherished great-grandfather of Norman Rogers III, Lily Rogers, Kaison Miller, and Audrey Miller.
Friends may call at the family owned Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 York Road (Beltway Exit 26) on Friday, February 9, 2024 from 4-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 10 Willow Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21206, on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at 11am. Interment Parkwood Cemetery.

George was my dear cousin Joanie´s husband, and the two of them were close to my mom and dad as they forged their last years. George Miller´s wry humor was matched only by his generous skills as a physician. I last saw George and Joanie at their home Windy Ridge home 15 years ago, when as always they were delightful hosts. I´ve expressed by condolences to Joanie and their children, but here I want all others to know how much I thank and respect and love them and all the extended Baltimore family from whom I´ve been separated by so many miles for so many years.
