George Lester Moore
October 21, 1933 – June 3, 2025
George Lester Moore died at home on Tuesday, June 3. He is survived by his son, Jeff Moore, and daughter-in-law, Denise Wright, of Atlanta. He was born in Nashville, TN, to Harold C. Moore and Edna Olvia Binkley. After a short stint as a cab driver, which he loathed, he joined the US Navy in 1950 and served during the Korean War. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he moved to Atlanta where he met Alice Ellene Free, a fellow resident at a boarding house on Piedmont Avenue. They married in 1956 and welcomed their beloved only son in 1964. The family moved from Smyrna to Canton in 1973, where George and Ellene were members of the Canton First Baptist Church until their deaths.
His Navy service led to a 32-year career at Lockheed. Upon early retirement, George and Ellene enjoyed their home, their hobbies, and their garden until her death in 1996. After Ellene's death, George and his dear friend Jane Smith traveled and enjoyed a vibrant social life until her death in 2019.
George's life was remarkable because he was so important to so many people. He supported and loved his family without fail. His friends are numerous and span generations.
He will be remembered for his charm, his wry sense of humor, his craftsmanship as a woodworker, his enthusiasm for computer technology, his perfect lawn, his imperfect golf game, his better poker game, and his love of his dogs. But most importantly, he will be remembered for his generosity. He devoted many hours to charity and to civic organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, and was always ready to give his time-and sometimes his money-to support a worthy cause. He will long be mourned by those who lives he touched. We should all strive to earn such a legacy.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans at
