ABBEVILLE...George Edgar Murphy, a resident of Abbeville, died Thursday morning, October 30, 2025, at his home. He was 97. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 1, 2025, in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Henry Fullington, Darden Kirby and Reverend Justin Aultman officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary. Graveside services, with military honors provided by the American Legion, will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. Abbeville, AL 36310. Mr. Murphy was a lifelong resident of the Murphy Station Community in Abbeville, son of the late Clarence Malcolm Murphy, Sr. and Mary Roberts Murphy. He was a graduate of Abbeville Secondary Agricultural School and attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) where he received a B.S. Degree in Agricultural Economics. Upon graduation from Auburn, Mr. Murphy was in the first group that was drafted into the U. S. Army from Henry County. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Murphy was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He was retired as the owner and operator of Murphy Farm Center. Mr. Murphy was a life member of the Bradley-Keller American Legion Post No. 119. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Brannon Murphy; two sisters, Jane Kirby and Sarah Messick; and a brother, Mack Murphy. Surviving relatives include two daughters, Lisa Murphy Trawick (Chuck), Newville; and Ann Murphy, Huntsville; a son, Lee Murphy (Nancy), Enterprise; a sister-in-law, Jane Messick Murphy, Abbeville; grandchildren, Amanda Aultman (Justin), Claudia Trawick, Eliza Trawick, Cal Trawick (Laurel), Justin Murphy, Josh Murphy (Mallory), and Julie Butterworth (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Dalton Aultman (Katie), Branden Aultman, Evelyn Murphy, Abigail Murphy, Mary Margaret Murphy, Jackson Butterworth, Caden Butterworth and Mary Ryan Butterworth; a great-great-granddaughter, Josie Aultman; several nieces and nephews. Serving as active pallbearers will be the grandsons and Andrew Hartzog, Mike Murphy, Brendt Murphy, James Jackson, Roger Scott and Chris Daughtry. The family would like to express their appreciation to SouthernCare Hospice including Mr. Murphy's special nurse, Susan Killebrew Beard, and special caregivers, Nina, Sarah, Brenda, Andrea and Kimmie for the loving care and kindness shown to Mr. Murphy during his illness.
