George Murphy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ramsey Funeral Home & Crematorium on Feb. 11, 2026.
George Earl Murphy, age 80 of Georgetown, Texas passed away on February 7, 2026, with his wife Laura at his side

George was born on October 29, 1945 in Wichita Falls to Margaret Giles Murphy and George Ernest Murphy. He grew up in Conroe, Texas where he recalled meeting Laura as a fellow elementary school student.

As a student at Conroe High School, George was elected Student Body President. He marched in the Conroe High School band, playing the trumpet.

George was a proud graduate of the University of Texas, serving during his time there as the President of the Longhorn Pharmaceutical Association. Because of this leadership, George was honored with the McKesson Robbins Award for unusual achievements at his later commencement. He was a member of Kappa Psi pharmaceutical fraternity, a member of Alpha Phi Omega - national service fraternity, and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa Society. George was honored at his 1970 graduation from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy with the Bristol Award for a student's outstanding contribution to pharmacy during his college career. George was a Life Member of the Texas Exes. As a college freshman in 1964, George attended church in Austin the morning following the Texas/OU football game - where he found in the parking lot what served as his fake ID for the remainder of his college needs.

George worked as a pharmacy resident in Fort Worth's Harris Hospital, later serving as a hospital pharmacist in Marshall, Texas prior to accepting employment with Abbott Laboratories in 1980. George and his family relocated with Abbott to Illinois in 1985, and he retired from Abbott after 22 years.

George spent his adult life as a devoted Methodist, teaching Sunday School for more than 40 years. Beloved by friends, family and neighbors, George was known for his faith, his storytelling, his sense of humor, his work ethic, and his optimistic spirit.

George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Laura Wood Murphy, his son Temple Murphy and wife Julie; his daughter Meghan Murphy Weller, and grandchildren Evan Murphy, Larkin Weller, and Emily Weller.

George loved birding, hiking, astronomy, and being outdoors. He was a skilled woodworker, whittler and harmonica player. George delighted in being a dad and grandpa but more than everything, he adored Laura fiercely, winking at her when she stood at his bedside in recent months.

A memorial will be held on February 17, 2026 at 3 o'clock PM at First United Methodist Church Georgetown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy, Audubon Society, or the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the Delaney at Georgetown Village.
