Brian Pope Obituary

Dr. Brian Eugene Pope passed away October 2, 2025. Brian was born July 24, 1959, in New Orleans, Louisiana but grew up & remained a life, long resident of Arlington, Texas. He graduated from Lamar High School in 1977 where he excelled in academics, sports and making friends. At the University of Texas in Austin, Brian graduated with highest honors & membership in Phi Beta Kappa in recognition of his academic achievements. He earned Master of Science in Psychology in 1984 and then Doctor of Philosophy at Florida State University in 1988. He served an internship with the Southwestern Medical School Branch of the University of Texas at Terrel State Hospital in 1988.

After completing his studies, Brian practiced as a Clinical Psychologist. He was admired and loved by his patients and his coworkers. He was especially gifted at helping youth. He served at both Tarrant & Dallas County Juvenile departments doing psychological evaluations to enable young people to get the help they needed.

Brian had many eclectic interests. He loved rock & roll and had an extensive music collection. He was an accomplished musician, singer, and songwriter. He recorded several albums of his original songs in which he often played all the instruments and performed the vocals. He collected album art, music posters, objects 'd art, books, gemstones, crystals & lots of fun, cool things. He had an amazing knack of gift giving and you could always count on him to find something interesting & unusual that you really liked but never would expect to receive.

Sports were another passion of Brian's. Growing up, he went to many Texas Rangers games with his family. Brian formed a Fantasy Football League with his brother, cousins, and friends. He spent many hours as Commissioner of the league and organizing the draft.

Brian had an expansive soft heart for those in need. He gave clothing, food and shelter to homeless people in his neighborhood. He also fed & cared for every stray cat he ever met.

Brian was a kind and loving step father to two children who look back on their relationship with Brian fondly and are thankful for the impact he made in their lives.

Brian was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Lewis Eugene Pope. His is survived by his mother, Mary Jane Pope, his brother Brad Pope & wife Meg, his niece Joanna Pope, scores of cousins, aunts & uncles, & his step children Courtney Sharp & Brendan Tyler.

I am saddened to learn of Brian´s passing. We met as classmates back at Wimbish Elementary and reacquainted at Nichols Junior High (I attended Berta May Pope Elementary for 5th & 6th grades). We played together on the basketball team as sophomores at Lamar. I remember him catching an elbow during practice which broke his contact lens and cut his eyeball!! Scary for all of us and a vivid memory- just not a fun memory.

Brian was a great guy and happy to have had him as a friend and teammate before we lost track of one another after graduation.

May he rest in peace, and my condolences to his family...

I was very sad to learn of Brian passing away. I was honored to have Brian as a friend at Lamar and to be his roommate for two years at UT.
He was such a wonderful friend to me and my family living in Austin.
