He served in the United States Army as part of the medical corps in Fort Jackson, South Carolina from 1974 – 1976 where he received a National Defense Service Medal. He went on to open a successful medical practice as an Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He eventually moved to Wilson in 1989 where he joined Carolina Clinic. Before retiring in 2013, he opened his own practice, Triangle East ENT and Cosmetic Surgery.
George is survived by his sons, George E. Newsome, Jr. and wife, Charlotte of Wilson, Seth E. Newsome and his mother, Tracy Greenwaldt both of Wilson; stepson, Jamie Lesane; grandsons, Jake and Christian; brother, William S. Newsome and wife, Deborah of Goldsboro, and his niece, Caroline Haithcock of Goldsboro.
